A lot of people suck.
Funny, right? Glad I caught your attention. But this is an unfortunate fact that will remain true until the end of time. The wealthy and poor, young and old have many of the same insecurities that reach beyond the boundaries of status and other demographics.
Let's rewind for a second, shall we?
The insecurities aren't what make people suck. It's the insecurities that sucky people project onto others that do. Projections are often expressed through snarly comments, microaggressions, and other subtle hostilities by those who are in the presence of someone they're intimated by. According to the APA, it's an actual thing for groups of people to gather and bond over different subject matters (people) to alleviate some of the emotional dissonance these insecurities cause.
To combat this, to remain confident in oneself, and to not fall prey to self sabotage and harmful behavior resulting from ones own insecurities - try to not suck! Remain unwavering and affirm yourself. Always.
A "planned ignore" is a concept in behavioral psychology which assists with reinforcement and behavior shaping. A practitioner pays attention to positive behaviors and ignores the unwanted actions so as to not reinforce them. I've learned to apply this tactic in every day life. Please feel free to study this one a bit more and use it! It can be a great tool for tuning out the noise.
Lastly, here's what I remind myself after I've ignored a sucky person:
Reminder #1: Small minds will always try and bring you down to their level. Unfortunately, I can't "unbig" myself. My role in this world is not to play small.
Reminder #2: What people think of me is none of my business. Hearsays are mainly ideas from small minds.
Reminder #3: Light doesn't exists without darkness. Continue to shine bright.
Planned ignore, for the win!
